Over the past 14 years, I was fooling myself thinking that I was retired and just running this little business to keep busy and alive. In fact what I was doing was hiding within the company using it as a front to continue working. How can you develop a small business from one vehicle to six vehicles utilizing numerous subcontractors to fulfill your contract drives as well drive and think you’re retired.
Well “that is just what I did” it all started in 2003 with one car doing designated driving with an old clunker and an acquaintance as my swamper who followed and picked me up. I was quite content doing that until more and more people wanted to use the service. How I expanded the knowledge of my service without spending a fortune on advertising, “which I didn’t have,” was to find a celebrity radio or TV individual who supported what I was doing. Together we worked on a plan of how he or his group could talk daily about what I was doing to benefit the public on the roads.
It didn’t take long for that to increase both the number of clients and vehicles required to handle the volume. What was lost in this was my initial goal of just keeping active and busy to maintain my health during my retirement years ahead. However, it turned into a viable business having two divisions to it. One was the Designated sector the other was a Limo Chauffeur sector.
So four years into this my wife Bunnie Marie who assisted in the initial part stated: “I thought this was just going to be a little retirement company.” You see it had grown to a six-vehicle company two sedans, two stretches, and two Extended SUV’s.
It now was a logistical nightmare running 24 hrs a day with eight sub-contractors.
So I had created a strong niche market without realizing it, after nine years I had a list of loyal businessmen and businesses who were more than clients they were business friends. Business friends who over the years knew they could depend on our service not only to provide them with transportation but filled with professional amenities which allowed them to produce while being comfortable and professionally conveyed.
My goal which I saw as the sound basis for my business was to establish a base of stable clients and then provide service above my competition. To do this, I studied the market and then started to add amenities I believed would be professionally beneficial. The first amenity was to add free secured WiFi to all my vehicles. Then I added invertors allowing for 110 Volt plugins for their electronic devices along with an assortment of wireless chargers. For my international clients, I provided a local cell phone for their use while in the Edmonton Area which was well received and utilized.
So once my wife asked me “I thought this was a Retirement company”? Reality set in I had gone far beyond a retirement business during this period a very valued client of mine revealed I had gone far beyond my competition and had created quite a stable “Niche Market” which was not dependent on the trends of the public sector.
Which all along had been my goal, since the beginning, providing a service not attainable anywhere else. My desire was to create an exclusive service you could only obtain by being in the Niche Market I had created. I had attained that goal and realized it was time to slow down.
Due to the economic situations and the future of Alberta’s political and economic scene, I felt it best to wind things up to slow down and open a new door to stimulate me both physically and mentally.
Periodically I will be writing about the things I used in developing this market and why I have decided to fully retire and become a commentator on various topics through this site. I am warning you now I am not and never will be a Politically Correct supporter or advocate of the Global Warming/Climate Change regimes sweeping our Country and World. MY GOAL THROUGH these items will be first to share business ideas which were successful. The overall aim will be to get back the CANADA QUICKLY DISAPPEARING BEFORE MY EYES.
Again I remind you this is just a Senior Citizen who is retired and expressing his opinion for what it is worth. My wife Bunnie Marie suggested I title this article
