Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
As we search each commandment deeper, it is becoming clearer how ignorant most believers are towards keeping any of the Ten Commandments let alone understand the legal perspective, from which Satan stands on. The ninth commandment is a prime example of how simple it is for Satan. All he has to do is plant a seed and watch it grow.
The ninth commandment concerns our own and our neighbour’s good name. This forbids speaking falsely on any matter, lying, equivocating, and any way devising or designing to deceive our neighbour. Speaking unjustly against our neighbour, to hurt his reputation. Bearing false witness against him, or in common conversation slandering, backbiting, and tale-bearing; making what is done amiss, worse than it is, and in any way endeavouring to raise our reputation upon the ruin of our neighbour’s. How much this command is broken every day among persons of all ranks!
In the law of Moses are very plain marks of sound moral feeling, and of true political wisdom. Everything in it is suited to the desired and avowed object, the worship of one only God, and the separation of Israel from the pagan world. Neither parties, friends, witnesses, nor common opinions, must move us to lessen great faults, to aggravate small ones, excuse offenders, accuse the innocent, or misrepresent anything.
It is required of us in following Christ, that we duly attend his ordinances, strictly follow his pattern, and cheerfully submit to his disposals; and this is from love to him, and with dependence on him.
The gospel is the only remedy for lost sinners. Many abstain from gross vices and do not attend to their obligations to God. Thousands of instances of disobedience in thought, word, and deed, are marked against them in the book of God. Thus, numbers forsake Christ, loving this present world: they feel convictions and desires, but they depart sorrowful, perhaps trembling. It is necessary for us to try ourselves in these matters, for the Lord will try us.
In Christ, the Lord our Righteousness, refuge is provided for those who by faith flee unto him. But there is no refuge in Jesus Christ for presumptuous sinners, who go on still in their trespasses. Those who flee to Christ from their sins shall be safe in him, but not those who expect to be sheltered by him in their sins.
